THE SECRETS WOMEN KEEP.

THE SECRETS WOMEN KEEP by FANNY BLAKE.

SOURCE: The fifth of six books won celebrating the blogoversary of Lindsay over at THE LITTLE READER LIBRARY

THE BOOK {According to the back cover}:Rose waits for her family to arrive at their villa in Tuscany when a casual glance at her husband's phone tips her world upside down. The text reads simply: 'Miss you. Love you. Come back soon.'

Daniel has always been popular with women, she knows that. But until this moment she has had no cause for worry. Has something shifted within their marriage without her realising?

As the family gathers for the summer break, Rose's faith in Daniel is shaken. How well does she really know him? She fears that, after decades of marriage and children, the man who lies beside her at night is lying in other ways too. Then events take a tragic turn.

FIRST SENTENCE {September: Chapter 1}: The dark outline of the doorway framed a section of the sun-drenched garden beyond, the brilliance of the outdoor colours such a contrast to the house's shady interior.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 219}: One of his passions, before he was almost too drunk to do much more than prop up the bar and throw what few hotel profits there were down his throat, was reading. He devoted one room in the hotel to his extraordinary collection of natural history, local interest and history books.

MY THOUGHTS: Essentially the story of Rose, her best friend, Eve, who also happens to be her sister-in-law and their spouses. The Secrets Women Keep is a tale of what goes on behind closed doors, the story revolving around relationships full of deceit and half truths. The adage 'Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive' summing it up perfectly.

Though starting out well (I'd even go as far as to say it was quite refreshing to have a novel in which things weren't all hunky-dory, the characters incredibly flawed rather than perfect) after a while the constant deceit and marital melodramas became depressing, the characters, displaying little other than their flaws, one dimensional and tedious.

A novel I simply couldn't immerse myself in other than on the most superficial of level. Given the title of the book I was hoping for at least one strong female character, either main or secondary, instead of which I got a cast of weak and in Anna and Jess, Rose's daughters, spoilt women none of whom came alive for me.

RIGHT CLICK.

Honoured to have read and reviewed the two previous books in the series, Click: An Online Love Affair and Double Click today I have the pleasure of reviewing the third and final book in the trilogy .....

RIGHT CLICK by LISA BECKER.

SOURCE: Received for review from the author.

THE BOOK {According to the back cover}: Love. Marriage. Infidelity. Crises of identity. Death. Cupcakes. The themes in Right Click, the third and final instalment in the Click series, couldn't be more pressing for this group of friends as they navigate through their 30's. Another six months have passed since we last eavesdropped on the hilarious, poignant and oftentimes inappropriate email adventures of Renee and friends. As the story continues to unfold, relationships are tested and some need to be set "right" before everyone can find their "happily ever after."

FIRST SENTENCE EMAIL {Chapter 1: The New Normal}: From: Renee Greene - June 26, 2013 - 8.22 AM
To: Shelley Manning
Subject: Re: Calling it quits?
I saw the weather report in Seattle. It's raining today ... again ... in June! That makes three straight days, no? I'm sure you've already hit all of the tourist spots by now. You ready to move back to LA? Sunny and 75 today ... as usual. Ashley and I (and Siobhan) will treat you at Mel's.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 13}: From: Renee Greene - July 5, 2013 - 12.57 PM
To: Shelley Manning
Subject: Re: Fireworks?
There was another 'movie moment' where Ethan is running down the street with a super soaker in each arm. There's a five second delay and then you see every kid in the neighbourhood chasing after him. I wish I had been recording it, because it was almost too outlandish to believe. However it's ALL true.

MY THOUGHTS: The third and final instalment in a remarkable set of books made all the more remarkable because just like the previous two books (Click: An Online Love Story and Double Click) it is written as a series of emails. Not my favourite format it has to be said, it says a lot about the quality of writing that I got through part one let eagerly awaited parts two and three.

In Right Click some six months have passed since we left 30 somethings Renee, Shelley, Ashley, Mark and co. and though its been over a year since I read and reviewed the second instalment (Double Click), this, the third book in the trilogy, felt like catching up with old friends.

Never particularly a big fan of Shelley (my favourite throughout has always been Mark) though it has always been part of her and Renee's relationship this time round I found the innuendo between them a tad too much at times and yet strangely enough rather than taking away from the overall appeal of the book it simply added to the believability of the characters.

Though sad to see the end of a series that made me laugh and, yes, at times brought a tear to my eye, I'm sure this won't be the last we'll hear of the talents of Lisa Becker.

DEAD EVER AFTER.

DEAD EVER AFTER by CHARLAINE HARRIS.

SOURCE: Purchased from amazon.co.uk

THE BOOK {According to the inner front cover}: Sookie Stackhouse has one last adventure in store.

Life has taken her from a waitress in Merlotte's Bar, Bon Temps, to part owner; from social outcast to the heart of her community; from a vampire's girlfriend to the wife of one of the most powerful vampires in the state. She has survived explosions, revolutions and attempts on her life. Sookie has endured betrayal, heartbreak and grief...and she has emerged a little stronger, and little wiser, every time.

But with life comes new trials...

The question is, in the end: who will love, who will live, and who will be dead ever after?

FIRST SENTENCE {Prologue}: January.
The New Orleans businessman, whose gray hair put him in his fifties, was accompanied by his much younger and taller bodyguard/chauffeur on the night he met the devil in the French Quarter.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 249}: She wondered if she could cast a stunning spell without any herbs or preparation. It wasn't like in the Harry Potter books, though she and every other witch of her acquaintance had often wished it were.

MY THOUGHTS: Part thirteen, the final novel in the Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood series. It is my opinion that in order to get the best out of the books they really need to be read in order.

Not a fan of the star rating system to begin with and given that at its best I thought Dead Ever After deserved four stars (at its worst one star) I can't remember a time when I've felt so conflicted as to how to rate a book.

So, why the one star?

There were several reasons, not least of which was the romance. Sure feelings can change and I accept that but to be reminded over twelve books that there was no sexual chemistry whatsoever between certain characters only for this to completely change (and my how it changed) by the end of the book just didn't ring at all true.

Feeling altogether a bit rushed. I had heard it suggested that the last few novels were only written to cash in on the success of the TV series and whilst hopefully not that cynical myself I did get the feeling that the authors heart and soul was no longer fully in it.

Then there was the ending itself. Whilst I thought the rest of the book an enjoyable enough read (certainly better than the last few) I felt the lame ending an insult to the reader, a slap in the face to those loyal enough to have followed the series from its beginnings way back in 2001.

But what about those four stars?

Though sad that some long standing characters seemed to merely fizzle out, their own stories somehow unresolved, I adored that some other well loved characters were brought back ..... even if my favourite wasn't amongst them.

Refreshing in that there weren't too many of the scrapes that seemed to typify many of the previous books, that there was next to nothing in the way of sex scenes (its just a shame that what there was was so cringe worthy). I really think that this, the final instalment, saw Sookie finally come into her own as a strong, capable (though slightly bitter) woman instead of the somewhat 'prissy' individual largely dependent on men (both living and otherwise) that she seemed to have morphed into.

Whilst I firmly believe that as a series 'Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood had run its course I suspect that Dead Ever After would not have been so widely condemned if it wasn't for the fact so many (myself included) were disappointed with the ending, that they felt let down by an author they had come to expect so much of.

CELEBRATING LITHA.

Magic crowns Midsummer. Under the big waxing Moon tonight may your celebrations be joyous and all your meetings most merry
- Author Unknown.

Seen by many as the one and the same. with one ruling the waxing year, the other the waning year, there cannot be one without the other.

As the season's turn so the Holly King (traditionally thought of as an older man clad in red and decked with holly leaves and berries) and the Oak King (dressed in green and clad in oak leaves and acorns, traditionally he is thought of as the younger of the two) fight a constant battle to win the favour of the Goddess and just as the Oak King defeats the Holly King at Yule (the Winter Solstice) so (the Summer Solstice) Litha known as Alban Hefin or Alban Heruin in the druid traditiononce again sees the Holly King defeat the Oak King to reign until Yule.

One of the fire festivals, sacred to the mother Goddess and pregnant women. Lore has it that Midsummer's Night is a time of powerful magic, a time when faeries, sprites and wood elves known for their love of music, laughter and food and drink emerge to play tricks on us mere mortals.

Midsummer Mead .....

Take 1 quart/two pints of dry cider (an alcohol-free version may be used),
3/4 cup of honey,
1/4 cup of various citrus fruits, sliced,
3 cinnamon sticks of approximately 3 inches/7 centimetres long.

Wishing a happy Summer Solstice to those in the northern hemisphere and a happy Winter Solstice to those in the southern hemisphere.

OFF KEY.

OFF KEY* by MARK ROBERTSON.
{*Whilst available to download now the paperback version that Mark kindly sent me is not available until the 28th of June.}

SOURCE: Received for review from the author. The image of the cover is courtesy of Troubador

THE BOOK {According to the back cover}: Charlotte has supported Kyle's precarious musical career for three years. Now she thinks it's her turn. When Kyle doesn't want to play the breadwinner, she looks to a future on the other side of the Atlantic.

Saxophonist Kyle has no money, no career and has now lost the love of his live. Can an autistic twelve-year-old boy and an alcoholic 'has been' be his salvation?

FIRST SENTENCE {Prologue}: She looked around the bedroom.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 18}:"Kyle".
Oh God! It was that tone, the red button one! She was going to use the T word. He hated the T word more than anything.
"Look I really can't go on like this. We need to talk."
There it was the God-awful 'T-word'.

MY THOUGHTS:  Though I'd hesitate to Off Key is in any way biographical I think it fair to assume that as a musician himself the author may well have come across similar situations and characters which is what, along with his 'northern humour', makes it such a engaging story. My only niggle with it being that amongst all of the various threads - Kyle and Charlie's relationship, Charlie and Dainty's friendship, Harry's comeback etc - twelve year old Craig's story did get rather lost which was a pity as I felt his character had so much more mileage.

Still, a great read for those into their music and especially jazz. I'm sure it will appeal to those living in the north east of England who will doubtlessly have heard of many of the places mentioned. And as for those familiar with the workings of your typical Working Man's Club - well, I'm sure they'll be delighted by what we are assured is 'the greatest story ever told about love .... and jazz.

Worried to begin with that it would be of limited appeal, after all its not every reader who is a jazz loving 'northerner' into live music. A few chapters in I realised my fears were totally unfounded as jazz and location aside the book's central themes of relationships (both lost and re-found), hope and second chances are universal, its characters with all their flaws and idiosyncrasies, their hopes and dreams easy to relate to.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY by RICHARD C. MORAIS.

SOURCE: Received for review from Publishers, Alma Books.
The Hundred-foot Journey
THE BOOK {According to Alma's press release}: The Hundred-foot Journey is the story of Hassan Haji, a boy from Mumbai who embarks, along with his boisterous family, on a picaresque journey first to London and then across Europe, before they ultimately open a restaurant opposite a famous chef, Madame Mallory, in the remote French village of Lumière. A culinary war ensues, pitting Hassan’s Mumbai-toughened father against the imperious Michelin-starred cordon bleu, until Madame Mallory realizes that Hassan is a cook with natural talents far superior to her own.

FIRST SENTENCE {Mumbai: Chapter 1}: I, Hassan Haji, was born, the second of six children, above my grandfather's restaurant on the Napean Sea Road in what was called West Bombay, two decades before the great city was renamed Mumbai.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {33}: But still they came, begging for work, their gaunt faces pressed against the back door, Papa chasing them away with a roar and a swift kick.

MY THOUGHTS: Soon to be a major motion picture (I believe it opens here in the UK on September 12th) The Hundred-Foot Journey is available in different covers including the paperback version I received and, for those who like the idea of a movie edition, a cover featuring three of the films stars.

A tale of humble eateries, a novel of fine dining, that takes the reader from India to France via England and other parts of Europe. With a narrative that is by turn poignant (I actually found myself shedding tears over one character's decline) and sumptuously mouth-watering (not to mention occasionally laughably cheesy) this should have been a veritable feast of a story and yet ultimately I found it unfilfilling.

Full of descriptions that were incredibly vivid if at times a little too lengthy and a portrayal of Indian cuisine that was impressive (the French element less so) I'm afraid it was the plot, so obviously a secondary consideration, that was lacking. The fact that the author acknowledged he had high hopes the book would become a film telling in as far as it went some way to explaining why at times the novel read like a screenplay.

With narrative such as a pan seethes with “prattling onions and furiously spitting lemon grass" and scenes which see clams no bigger than babies fingernails being served I'm sure this is many a foodies idea of literary heaven, its just unfortunate that it wasn't to my taste.

ANGELA MERKEL: THE CHANCELLOR AND HER WORLD.

ANGELA MERKEL: THE CHANCELLOR AND HER WORLD by STEFAN KORNELIUS.

SOURCE: Received for review from Publishers, Alma Books.

THE BOOK {According to the back cover}: With the Eurozone engulfed in an unprecedented crisis, one political figure looms largest of all, Angela Merkel, the leader of its most powerful economy. While foreign affairs have become the central issues of her chancellorship in this crucial election year, the entire world is anxiously looking to Germany to play its part in Europe’s rescue.

This authorized biography sheds light on the person behind the politician – from her youthful days of hitchhiking in Tbilisi to being the guest of honour at a White House state dinner – and examines how a girl from East Germany rose to the highest echelons of European power. As well as explaining how Angela Merkel’s world view was shaped and influenced by her background and ideology, Stefan Kornelius’s lively account discusses her personal relations with international counterparts such as David Cameron, Barack Obama or Vladimir Putin, as well as her attitude towards the countries and cultures over which they rule.

FIRST SENTENCE {Merkelmania: The Chancellor's New Power}: In the eighth year of her chancellorship, Angela Merkel has reached the zenith of her power - again.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 11}:I further evidence of the German Chancellor's new power were required, this was provided by the Mattel toy company, who designed a Barbie doll modelled on her - claiming that Merkel was a role model for girls who dreamt of being able to become 'whatever they wanted'.

MY THOUGHTS: Not nearly as dry (dare I say as boring?) as I had feared it might be. As it turns out this, the official biography of Germany's first female Chancellor, was actually an interesting and illuminating read though I personally would have preferred to read a little more about Angela Merkel the woman as opposed to Angela Merkal the politician.

A well written, and what I felt was a fairly unbiased read that, not too heavy going, combines the story of Merkel's life as a child and student to what is described as her 'meteoric ascent to the senior ranks in German politics' to her time as Chancellor with a look as to what might follow post-chancellorship.

I DON'T CARE HOW OLD I AM, I'M GONNA .......

Having laughed at this post on Traci's site I simply had to join in the fun and post the things I'm gonna do not caring how old I am.

But first I wanted to share this .....

#1 Have Bear Necessity (a teddy Mr T bought for me to cuddle whilst he was in hospital) by my bedside.

#2 Sulk every time Mr T 'buys' the railway stations when we play Monopoly - its a tradition started in my childhood that just as my (naughty) little sister gets to be the dog I get to buy Fenchurch Street, Marylebone, Liverpool Street and King's Cross stations.

#3 Head straight for Hook-A-Duck at the fairground.

#4 Nibble the chocolate off a Fry's Turkish Delight before starting on the rose-flavoured filling.

#5 Delight in reading books with children's covers despite the fact that they are also available with 'adult' covers.

#6 Shout 'Weee' every time a rugby player slides across the ground scoring a try.

#7 Slam doors in temper.

#8 Love balloons.

#9 Consider a party a total success only if Pass-The-Parcel is played.

#10 Feel the desire to roll around on bubblewrap.

What about you, what are you gonna do no matter your age?
